  • ½ green bell pepper, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 cup tomato sauce
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tsp brown sugar
  • 1 tsp smoked paprika
  • ½ tsp salt (adjust to taste)
  • ½ tsp black pepper
  • 1 loaf French bread, cut in half lengthwise
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1½ cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • Fresh parsley (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  • In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef, breaking it up, and drain off excess fat.
  • Add the onion, bell pepper, and garlic; cook until they are softened.
  • Stir in the tomato sauce, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, brown sugar, smoked paprika, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5–7 minutes, until the mixture has thickened.
  • 4Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  • Mix the melted butter and garlic powder, then brush it onto the French bread halves.
  • Bake the bread for 5 minutes, until it is slightly crisp on the outside.
  • Spread the sloppy joe mixture evenly over the toasted bread halves.
  • Top with shredded cheddar cheese.
  • Return to the oven and bake for 5–7 minutes, until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
  • Let rest for 2 minutes, then slice and garnish with parsley, if desired. Serve.

Notes

Toast the bread before adding the meat mixture to prevent it from becoming soggy. Simmer the beef mixture until thick for best results. Store leftovers in the fridge for 3 days or freezer for 2 months; reheat in the oven for optimal texture.
